When Life’s got me down I like to read short stories by Ray Bradbury. He wrote some horror, a la H. P. Lovecraft, but generally his stuff is pretty light and comforting. I’ve been a fan for almost sixty years. Another author I never tire of is J. G. Ballard. His early stuff is another favorite, but later on he occasionally went off the rails.
Thank you. Ballard is a lot less well-known than Bradbury, but if you’re going to give him a try I would suggest Chronopolis and Other Stories (early short fiction) and Empire of the Sun (semi-autobiographical novel) written about his time in a Japanese internment camp after the fall of Singapore. The latter was made into an acclaimed movie starring John Malkovich, I believe.
