For my last newsletter of 2023, I wanted to do a round-up of my favourite books of the year. In honour of the year that was, to keep things short, and to make things hard for myself, each review is 23 words or less. Please feel free message me and tell me all about your favourite books of the year.
The Dangers Of Smoking In Bed by Mariana Enriquez
A collection of unhinged and eerie short stories that range from creepy to fetish-y to spine-chilling.
Big Swiss by Jen Beagin
Transcriptionist falls in love with the voice of her boss’s patient. Good plot, funny story, satisfying payoff. Would make an excellent Netflix series.
Bunny by Mona Awad
What happened? No one can really say but it’s a sort of fill-in-the-blanks fairy tale with loads of gore to keep you entertained.
Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen
Mental health, womanhood and adolescence; I wish it were longer and I wish I could know what happened to each woman.
They’re Going To Love You by Meg Howrey
A refreshing look at family with lots of beautiful prose about dance and movement. (Reminds me why I couldn’t be a ballerina.)
Thanks for being here this year and subscribing—it means a lot!
See you in 2024.
Enjoy!
